parenting magazines want – short nonfiction with a regional slant.
Most parenting magazines buy one-time rights, or first rights.

From the Fridge: A from-the-editor piece showcasing events in the
area and introducing some of the articles in the magazine
Report Card: News and Views from the Area Schools. Clearly an
in-house piece about area school happenings – this issue mostly
registration and open house dates.
Young Performers Bring Family Fun to Missouri State Fair Pepsi
Grandstand. Another in-house piece about the celebrities slated to
appear at the fair. This was the “cover feature” since Corbin Blue is
the cover.
Back to Class with Class by Martin W. Schwatz. The editor talks
with local mechants about what is popular for kids. [Two pages, includes
a sidebar on the “sales tax holiday” and four photos.]
Separation Anxiety: Sending Mama’s Boy Off to School by Rebecca
Carroll. An essay on the pain of sending your little boy off to school
and watching him make that big separation influenced by peers to “be
cool” and not hug mom in public. 9 paragraphs – 450 - 500 words. [1 page
with photo – magazine also runs bio with photo of authors]
Center Section – This four-page is normally a pull-out. This time
it’s a pull out about the things available at the Missouri State Fair.
The One-Line Philosopher by Dave Weinbaum. Clearly a regular
feature – jokes by the publisher.
Don’t Cut the Kid by Dave Weinbaum. Essay about the value of
sports to a kid’s self-image and maturity. Two pages – around 1000
words. One photo.
Home Sweet School by Mavis Day – The president of the Jefferson
City Home Educators talks about reasons to homeschool. One page, about
550 – 600 words
August Events – local calendar
Giving Kids a Shot At Good Health by Candy Shaw. Article by a
local nurse on vaccinations. Includes a sidebar on the vaccine
abbreviations and what they stand for. Also a short sidebar of the
Missouri Immunization Requirements for 2007 – 08. Two pages. The article
is about 500 words, with sidebars probably equal in length.
May You Never Do This by Sydnee Crain. A poem about a mother’s
panic over a daughter who is still out at four am.
